Android makes the call --- on its own?
Just like the rest of us "Netjunkies", it seems the Android platform can't stay away from being connected.
Third party applications installed on Android can automatically switch on roaming to get a data connection, whether you asked it to or not. And, as a result, many users are reporting huge data charges.
T-Mobile's official statement said, some third party apps, when in use do have the ability to switch on roaming without informing the user, and the user should have been informed of this when they downloaded the app. T-Mobile also said If a customer would like to use their T-Mobile G1 while outside the country, they should contact Customer Care before they leave to ask that the WorldClass feature be added to their service at no additional charge.
Ok well how many people ACTUALLY READ the fine print before dowloading an app?
Yea, me either.
But we can disable data roaming on the G1.
This can be done by going through the following steps:
Home Screen > Menu > Settings > Wireless Controls > Mobile Networks > Data Roaming.
If you have a stock G1, this should work for you no problem.
But as for the rest (most) of us, we will just have to pay attention to the third party apps fine print when we install. As they require access to the internet, and can turn on data roaming when the app is in use.
So, I guess it does help to read the fine print afterall.
